On 28 March 2008 round table conference “Participants of electoral process: their problems and opportunities” organized by Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan in collaboration with OSCE/ODIHR was held in Astana
Deputies of Mazhilis and Senate of the Parliament, representatives of political parties, public associations and non-governmental organizations, Assembly of People of Kazakhstan, interested governmental agencies and research institutions took part in the round table conference, which was devoted to issues of further improvement of electoral legislation.
Opening the meeting, Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. K. Turgankulov underlined that the basic task of a range of round table conferences initiated by CEC is comprehensive discussion and elaboration of proposals on amendments to electoral legislation, which will take into account opinions of all interested parties and contribute in democratization of electoral system in Kazakhstan.
Deputy Head of OSCE Center in Astana Ms. Jeannette Kloetzer in her welcome speech also marked that work on improvement of electoral legislation must be targeted in the future and on achievement of specific result.
Participants of the round table discussed a wide range of issues related to different aspects of electoral process.
During discussions a series of specific proposals on reforming legal framework of elections were voiced. Some of them had conceptual character, others clarified existing provisions of the Constitutional Act “On elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan”.
Summing up the outcomes of the meeting Mr. K. Turgankulov confirmed readiness of the CEC to co-operate with all interested parties and noted that all proposals at the round table conference will be analyzed and discussed at the next working meeting.
At the same time all constructive ideas will be taken into account during the process of elaboration of package of proposals to the draft law on amendments to the Constitutional Act “On elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan”.
