On 2 June 2009 Secretary of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Bakhyt Sarsenbayevich Meldeshov met Executive Director of international non-governmental organization in the field of human rights protection “Human Rights Watch” Mr. Kenneth Roth by his request. Research officer of Human Rights Watch in Central Asia Ms. Andrea Berg also took part in the meeting.
In the course of meeting the parties exchanged opinions about prospects for improvement of electoral system and electoral process in the Republic of Kazakhstan in accord with international standards for democratic elections in the light of the forthcoming chairmanship of Kazakhstan in OSCE in 2010.
Mr. Bakhyt Meldeshov noted that CEC would continue consideration of Recommendations by the OSCE ODIHR Election Observation Missions as well as of other international organizations within the framework of the work on further improvement of national electoral legislation. CEC Secretary also focused on some particular new amendments to the electoral legislation, adopted in February 2009.
Mr. Kenneth Roth in his turn underlined that international non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch, which protects human rights, shares the intention of Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan on ensuring transparent elections, improvement of electoral legislation and electoral technologies taking into consideration best international practice. “In connection with the forthcoming chairmanship of Kazakhstan in OSCE international organizations scrupulously trace implementation obligations by Kazakhstan”,- said Mr. Roth.
“We will continue our consistent work on improvement of Constitutional Act “On Elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan” in accord with universally recognized principles for democratic elections”, - stressed Bakhyt Meldeshov in the end of meeting.
