On 15-16 October 2009 Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan held a working meeting with experts of OSCE/ODIHR, headed by the senior election expert Mr. Jonathan Stonestreet, on the improvement of electoral legislation of Kazakhstan.
The meeting was held under the primary agreement between the Chairman of CEC Mr. K. Turgankulov and Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE/ODIHR) Mr. Janec Lenarcic to hold consultations on the high-priority issues related to formulation of proposals to amend the Constitutional Law “On elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan”.
Participants of the working meeting extensively discussed the recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR on the outcomes of 2007 elections related to election administration, electronic voting, regulation of pre-election campaign and media, process of consideration of appeals and complaints, access of observers to the electoral process in all its stages.
In conclusion the parties agreed to continue consultations on the further improvement of electoral legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan in conformity to international standards for democratic elections.
