On 10 February 2011 the Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan K. Turgankulov received Resident Director of National Democratic Institute for international affairs (NDI) in Kazakhstan Ms. Amy Schultz by her request.
Issues relating to democratic process in Kazakhstan were discussed at the meeting. Head of CEC acquainted Ms. Amy Schultz with the course of electoral campaign for election of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, appointed on 3 April 2011.
“According to amendments to the Constitutional Act on elections the early election of the President is held within two months from the day of its appointment. Therefore we have taken measures on creation of the most optimal conditions for the activities of candidates to President. In particular the term of some electoral procedures for the territorial election commission and the CEC was reduced”, noted Head of CEC.
Then the issues of co-operation between the Central Election Commission and NDI in the light of the forthcoming early election of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan were discussed at the meeting.
Ms. Amy Schultz emphasized that a good tradition of co-operation between NDI and CEC continues since 2003 and expressed the intentions of National Democratic Institute for international affairs to render assistance to election organizers in respect of informing voters on enrolment of citizens in voter registers and on voting procedures.
At the end of the meeting the parties agreed to continue further co-operation between CEC and NDI on the issues for increasing the level of citizens’ participation and awareness.
